Concert Music + Commissions

Jonathan Worsley's eclectic influences bring together the sensibilities of the golden age of film music, a dose of early 20th-century classical, jazz-based harmonies, British/Celtic-informed melodies, the mystic stasis of ambient/minimalist music, a healthy battering of heavy metal, all usually organised within a manifold of nature-based poeticism.

Upper Structures (2021) - Orchestra - [for BBC NOW's Composition: Wales 2022]

Upper Structures (2021)

An abstract piece constructed around 'upper structures', a jazz-piano chord-voicing technique. This piece explores all nine available upper structure voicings.

Film and Media

Film-Scoring Ethos

Jonathan Worsley is of the firm opinion that good film music should:

  • work as engaging standalone compositions
  • be of the same craft as live acoustic orchestral concert music (even when using virtual instruments);
  • use synthesisers and close-recorded instruments only when necessary (perhaps surpsingly, as a keyboard player in rock bands);
  • be presentable in scored music notation
  • be melodic (and thus transferrable through singing);
  • respond to on-screen action
  • be nuanced (e.g. not epic for the sake of epic)
  • contain some human performance (even just a MIDI keyboard input); and
  • have time dedicated to its creation.

These self-imposed limitations narrow the work that Jonathan is willing to take on, but ensure that he only engages with projects he truly feels passionate about. He is heavily influenced by the emotive power and craft of 'Live to Projection' film concerts, as well as John Williams' Hal Leonard concert arrangements.

Film music is so engrained in modern culture that Jonathan believes composers have a duty to write soundtracks that are not afraid to emotionally or cerebrally challenge audiences.

Notable influences: John Williams (Close Encounters, E.T.Harry Potter etc.), Howard Blake (The Snowman), Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings), Bernard Hermann (Psycho, Vertigo etc.), Thomas Newman (Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty), Randy Newman (Toy Story), Gordy Haab (Star Wars and Indiana Jones video games), and Chuck E. Myers (Hogwarts Legacy).

Four Reference Scores (Bridgerton, Spider-Man, OCEAN, Spring) - for Scenes + Sessions (2025) at the University of Aberdeen

Four Reference Scores, for
Scenes + Sessions (2025) at the University of Aberdeen

Scenes + Sessions is a film-music composition project organised by Xavier Lo (project lead), Chiron Farrimond, Sam Griffiths, and Jonathan Worsley. Through it, aspiring composers attend a series of educational workshops, culminating in them having their own short film scores recorded live by professional musicians.

Jonathan's roles include Orchestration Tutor and Score Supervisor.
He also composed reference scores for each of the four available films. These were arranged for both the actual live ensemble (woodwind quartet + string quartet), as well as for full orchestra.

The following examples are the fully orchestrated versions:
Bridgerton
Originally re-scored for Spitfire Audio's re-scoring competition in 2022.
Spider-Man (Uncle Ben's Death)
A short nature documentary by The Cue Tube.
Spring
A short animated fantasy film by The Blender Foundation. Edit by The Cue Tube.

Albums + Popular Music

Jonathan's true musical home is 70s rock music, particularly that of the band Queen. He is drawn to artists and bands who are intentionally creative, leading to genres such as art pop and progressive rock, and a reverence for concept albums. He also enjoys modern jazz fusion, Scandanavian folk metal, ambient music, and most recently the output of indie-folk artist (but truly ineffable) Sufjan Stevens.

Jonathan has been in many bands, across a variety of instrumental roles. His main instruments are piano/keyboards, guitar (electric, acoustic, 12-string, seven-string), and bass guitar (including six-string fretted and five-string fretless). He also has some facility on drums/percussion, and plays a number of folk instruments (to a modest passable level) including accordion, mandolin, bouzouki, tin-whistle, banjo, and bodhrán. In recent years, Jonathan has slowly begun performing vocals and live backing vocals.

Notable influences:
Rock: Queen (esp. early albums: Queen II, A Night at the Opera etc.); The Who (esp. concept albums: TommyQuadrophenia), Pearl Jam (Ten)

Pop: Kate Bush (Hounds of Love, Aerial etc.); Peter Gabriel (So), Paul Simon (Graceland)

Progressive RockGenesis (Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway etc.), Rush (Moving Pictures etc.), Mike Oldfield (Tubular Bells)

Folk: Sufjan Stevens (Michigan, Seven Swans, Illinois, Javelin), Joni Mitchell (esp. early albums: Clouds, Blue)

Metal: Tool (Lateralus), Turisas, Ensiferum, Fintroll

Jazz Fusion: Tigran Hamasyan, Knower/Louis Cole

Ambient: Brian Eno (Ambient 1: Music for Airports)
